Conformation Quiz: Freisian Sport Horses

Study the horses below. Then answer the quiz questions to the best of your ability. Remember to take into consideration the breed type. Although not all are the same crosses, Friesian Sport Horses are, by definition, supposed to be sport horses, heavier-boned (but elegant and athletic) horses that could excel in dressage, show jumping, reining, eventing and driving. I will post the answers in a day (or two or three-- I'm in the middle of investigating a major abuse case). Please DO post your answers in the comments below, if you can-- let's get a good discussion started.

  1. 1. Rank the horses in order from best to worst. State why you ranked them as you did. A,B,C,D - Reason being, well, not entirely sure but C & D don't look like a lot of fun to ride

    2. Which horse is over at the knee? B, maybe A

    3. Which horse is most "herring gutted," or "tucked up?" C, but mainly because he's pretty skinny. D also looks tucked up, but he's a bit portly as well

    4. Which horse has the least steep croup? B [Holy Cow, look at D's!!!]

    5. Which horse's legs are too short in proportion to its body? D

    6. Which horse appears to be most "camped out behind?" A

    7. Which horse is best suited to reining? Probably B or D ... although D doesn't look very useful as a performance horse to me. Looks like a nice horse to have fun on and trail ride with, but looks to be out of shape and kinda Frankenstein-ish. I hope he was an "oops" - otherwise he kinda proves that breeding crossbreds can be a bit of a crapshoot.

    8. Which horse is best suited to show jumping? A, followed by B

    9. Which horse is "ewe necked?" C and D, but C's looks to be more obvious. I think if they would've set the horse up better it wouldn't stand out so much.

    10. Which horse appears to be "tied in at the knee?" Seeing as I'm not "googling" anything to find my answers, I can't remember what exactly "tied in at the knee" means. So, by just a guess, I'd say umm D?

Overall, I like A the best. Followed by B. The long back of B doesn't bother me that much, because my current boy is about as long as a freight train. Definitely prefer the look of a shorter back but not a back like D.

  2. 1. Rank the horses in order from best to worst. State why you ranked them as you did.
    I’m going A B C D as well.
While A has a bit of a wonky hind end, I like his shoulder and he seems fairly well-balanced. Though, while it’s a little hard to say from the picture, there’s something funny going on with the legs – seems like they’re not as substantial as I’d like.
B is a bit long, and I’m not wild about how her (I think it’s a mare) hind end ties in with the rest of her, but she has the best butt of the lot. Also, I’m fairly sure she’s the one that’s over at the knee.
C is very fancy up front (has the fairy horse hair), but what the heck is going on when you get past the girth? It looks like you tacked on the haunch of a different horse that was standing on higher ground. Also, a little long in the cannon bone for my tastes, and I’m not sure I’d like the pasterns if I could see them better.
    D. Oh dear. The poor thing looks like a halter QH crossed with a Mongolian pony. Horribly steep in the croup, wacky too-short neck.

    2. Which horse is over at the knee?
    I’d say B.

    3. Which horse is most "herring gutted," or "tucked up?"
    That would be C.

    4. Which horse has the least steep croup?
    B, I think.

    5. Which horse's legs are too short in proportion to its body?
    D. Or maybe it just looks that way because there’s so much body to be carried.

    6. Which horse appears to be most "camped out behind?"
Probably C – I think the fancy princess tail may be hiding some sins.

    7. Which horse is best suited to reining?
Buggered if I know. I’d say B, perhaps, because it has the most stock-horsey back end, but she’s a bit long to be catty.

    8. Which horse is best suited to show jumping?
Again, not a clue. I just dink around on an ugly TWH. We’ll go with A.

    9. Which horse is "ewe necked?"
    D. Definitely D.

    10. Which horse appears to be "tied in at the knee?"
Never heard this term, but it might explain what’s going on with A’s legs.

  3. Great exercise! Love it. I just want to say that I would probably not turn down any of these horses (well maybe C). Most have their good points.

    1. A B C D. I like A best of course. Best overall proportions and balance. Nice neck and head. Shoulder is a little steep and he is hip high. B Very muscular topend and but. Short neck, weak gaskin, steep shoulder. C-Long back of course and not balanced over all. Steep Croup. D-Ommm ya ommm. Nice colour if it hadn't faded. With some proper riding ie on the bit properly, this horse could change her shape substantially. I think a lot of her discombobulation is from improper riding but not all. She would be hard to ride.

    2. Which horse is over at the knee? B

    3. Which horse is most "herring gutted," or "tucked up?" I would defiantly say C.

    4. Which horse has the least steep croup? A has a nice angle. D is amazing. He would be so rough to ride.

    5. Which horse's legs are too short in proportion to its body? D. This poor guy just can’t catch a break.

    6. Which horse appears to be most "camped out behind?" In these pictures I would say C but it might be just the way she is standing. A looks to be a bit more “naturally” camped out.

    7. Which horse is best suited to reining? I would say B. She looks like she could get her hind end under her for spins and slides better that the others. Short cannon bones will help with this as well. She may not have the quickness needed though.

    8. Which horse is best suited to show jumping? I want to say A because I just love the proportions of this horse BUT I don’t think he would be scopy enough to get those legs out of the way. B looks more powerful and scopy so I will choose with her.

    9. Which horse is "ewe necked?" D poor D.

    10. Which horse appears to be "tied in at the knee?" A is tied in at the knee.
