Free Horses, Year in Review & More

Howdy folks. I hope you enjoyed the brief thaw we got... it sure didn't last long, did it!? Brrr. I'm feeling warmed, however, by your presence-- thanks for being here! This year North Horse got bigger than ever, with an average of 6,000 views per month. That's fantastic, because what those views produced was action! Together we pressured authorities to do something about the Barb Thiry case in and the Sean & Bonny Black case. Together we spread the word about horse rescue fundraisers, horses needing homes, and the ethical way to behave as a member of the horse world. We improved our horsemanship with quizzes, spread the word about scam artists, bad breeders and cruel trainers, and we supporter other horse lovers in their activism. Good job everybody. I hope you stick with me, because I hope we can accomplish even more in the new year!

Speaking of which, let's move on-- I've got good cause to share, news about neglect cases, and a looong list of horses that need homes. Ready, set, read!

I'm sure you'll want to attend the upcoming Kenosha County 4-H Tack Sale! It's Sunday, Jan. 26th at the Wilmont, WI high school. As usual, all proceeds go to teaching kids about horses through their 4-H Horse Project, and the $2 admission goes to the Midwest Therapeutic Riding Program. Click on this link to see a poster about the event. There's gonna be guest speakers and a raffle and food!

Next up, although I just posted this on Facebook, I'll repeat it here too (I know that not all of ya like that social media stuff):

The necropsy reports on the 4 dead Otter Creek Ranch horses were released... and to no one's surprise whatsoever, the causes of death of all four horses were malnutrition and parasites. There was no body fat left on the horses, consistent with long-term starvation. (Read more here.) Michael and Brenda Feist should not be allowed to have ANY animals, and yet they still have at least 80! I'm just fuming about the lack of action taken by authorities. Remember, a vet that accompanied cops onto the property on Sept. 30th told authorities way back then that horses were likely to die soon! Now it's three months later!!

In a similar case near the Twin Cities, a mother and daughter have been charged with animal neglect... again. Repeat offenders, this pair has been neglecting and killing animals for years.

Kathleen Mary Doenz and her mother, Gloria Irene Carlson, are animal hoarders that just won't stop. Carlson was actually ordered back in 2004 not to own any animals, but continued to do so by claiming they were her daughters'. In 2006, Doenz herself had been charged with 34 counts of animal neglect but plead to lesser charges and kept hoarding. Most recently in September 2013, 134 animals, including 12 near-dead horses and 21 dogs, were seized from the pair.  But neither were charged at the time! Now they are finally being charged this winter... and I have to wonder what good it will do. When laws are so lax, penalties so light, and enforcement so shoddy, I think they will be murdering animals again soon.

One of my biggest goals for 2014 is figuring out a way to get Wisconsin, and of course America and the world in general, to do more about neglect cases-- preventing them, punishing the abusers, and helping the innocent animals involved in them.

Speaking of critters... do you have room for one more? Of course there are MANY horses available from great Wisconsin horse rescues (I've listed those here). However, maybe you want a fewer-strings-attached type of deal. In that case, check these guys out!
